Surviving Mars has managed to do well enough to deserve a sequel-of-sorts. Surviving the Aftermath is a post-apocalyptic survival colony builder which builds on the blueprint laid down by Surviving Mars.

To be completely honest, we’re not totally convinced there’s all that much difference between surviving on post-apocalyptic Earth or, well, the surface of Mars, although we’re certainly keen to find out.

“With the staggering growth of Surviving Mars this year we knew we had something special and we wanted to find new ways to utilize survival management gameplay,” Nikhat Ali, lead producer on Surviving the Aftermath and Surviving Mars at Paradox Interactive, said. “Surviving the Aftermath gives us the opportunity to experiment with these mechanics in new and interesting ways that we think our players will love.”

Surviving the Aftermath is due to launch in late 2020 for PC (including Steam), PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. However, there is an Early Access preview program arriving in Q4 2019 which will allow players to get hands-on with an in-progress version. Surviving the Aftermath’s Early Access release will be available through the Epic Games Store and Xbox Game Preview. Tagging it as Early Access means Paradox can skirt neatly around the 30-day exclusivity limit recently implemented by Valve on Steam.

In case you missed it, 2018’s Surviving Mars is also going to be free to permanently add to your Epic Games Store library over the next week. Surviving Mars and its Space Base DLC will be completely free from Thursday, October 10th to Thursday, October 17th. Add it to your library and it’s yours to keep forever. At this point, if you just live 18 months behind the curve you don’t actually need to buy any new games whatsoever, it’s bewildering.
